Anger is something that everyone has to figure out how to manage. Teaching your clients a variety of techniques for managing anger will allow them a diverse tool box at their disposal. Besides quotes, handouts, games, and role plays, videos give visual learners what they crave.

4 Step Method for MANAGING Anger

Wellcast hit it out of the park with this one. Telling clients how bad anger can be for them is a great way to hook their attention and give purpose to the group. This 4-step method for handling anger includes some of the best techniques for calming down. Spending a little extra time on each of the 4 steps is a good ideas. These videos go by so fast, and clients may have trouble catching everything. Here are the 4 things to discuss and practice after watching the video:
  1. Deep breaths
  2. Relax your muscles
  3. Journal to Manage anger (See the next video as well)
  4. Seeking Context (which is really part of CBT)
These are some questions to ask after clients watch the video:
  1. Does anyone know any other techniques for deep breathing?
  2. What are some good ways to relax your muscles?
  3. When you journal, should you only write things that lead to your anger?
  4. For review, how does seeking context help manage anger?
  5. Can you give an example of something that has happened in your life that you have learned to think about rationally?

Using a Journal to Build Insight

Younger clients will appreciate the fast paced animation and relevant examples. It's so fast they may need to watch it a second time to be able to answer the following questions.
Questions to ask after the video:
  1. Why did this person decide he wanted to control his anger?
  2. What warning signs did he have that let him know he was getting angry? Is that important to know?
  3. What tool did this person use to help himself with anger?
  4. Does he still use his journal? Why not?
  5. How can a person grow out of their coping skills?
